Helical anchors differ from helical piles and piers in that helical anchors are only used in instances where uplift/tension applications are required, such as when a tieback is needed for a retaining wall.
Tiebacks and anchors are used for foundation walls that are bowing or leaning under external pressure from expanding or shifting soil. This extra pressure can cause severe damage to your foundation if it is not addressed. CNT Foundations can inspect your foundation walls to determine if helical anchors and tiebacks are the right foundation solution.
Helical anchors are often chosen for foundation repair as they are often the most efficient and cost-effective option for commercial property owners.
Helical anchors, like helical piles, are screwed into the earth. This process does not require excavation and can be done in any kind of weather. The installation process is relatively quick because there is no need for concrete. Like helical piles, helical anchors are drilled into the ground and can be installed in sites with limited access, making them much more versatile and cost effective than other foundation solutions that require excavation. Because they need to support a structure, Helical anchors are drilled at an angle, rather than straight down like a helical pile.
Expanding, shifting and receding soil can cause your foundation to be under pressure that it was not originally designed to withstand. When soil expands, it is usually due to freezing temperatures or groundwater permeating the clay present in the soil. The clay expands when wet, putting extra pressure on your foundation walls from the exterior. When the soil dries, it can pull away from the foundation wall, effectively removing the support the soil was giving to the wall. Dry soil creates cracks and fissures that allow water to more easily sink into the ground, furthering the damage. The repeated expanding and shrinking of the soil will continue to cause further damage to foundation walls, especially any that are already cracked, leaking or bowing.
